Another great day at the beach for Team Third Law BJJ of Naples, FL. This time around we started our day by doing a fun circuit. We split into two groups and ran a relay in the water, unfortunately we have no idea which team won because we where way to busy having fun. After finishing the circuit we went and ate some great food which was prepared for us.
Team Third law BJJ celebrating another crazy BBQ in Naples, FL
After many months of hard training at Third Law Brazilian Jiu Jitsu of Naples FL, Beker is finally promoted to Blue Belt, but for a final test of his willpower and commitment he is given one more task. For his first test he had to grapple for 1 hour straight (No Water No Brakes), each opponent went 110% for 1 minute to try to submit Beker. He lasted for 3 full rounds of every single person in class until his final goal he had to grapple with Roberto himself for one last minute.

Congratulations beker on receiving your Blue Belt. The best of luck for all your future hard work to come.
The White Belt Competition Team try outs where held at 3 am. The try outs were very tough with a lot of grappling, running, and everything in between. None the less everyone did a great job Congratulations to everyone and keep up the good work.
A great day at the beach for Team Third Law BJJ of Naples, FL. We started our day at the beach by doing a circuit (which is optional not mandatory). The circuit was tough but everyone made it through. The lay out was 21 kettle bell swings,21 Burpee’s, a minute of side to side,a sprint to the ocean for a swim with a person waiting in the water. This sequence was repeated 3 times.
In our First Awards Ceremony Banquet (now a yearly tradition) three main awards were given: Most Improved, Competitor of the Year, and Most Improved. Every year Coach Roberto Torralbas pushes all the guys to the limit and it is always good to take some time off to celebrate all their accomplishments. The Banquet was celebrated on March 22, 2009 just a few days after we celebrated the school second anniversary. Most Improved Grappler - Kevin “Humane Society” Dalton Kevin has accomplished a lot in less than one year. Kevin has won the White Belt Division at NAGA and currently medals every time he competes. Nevertheless the award was not given because of his competition credentials, but rather for his hard work. Kevin Arrived at Third Law weighting over 215 pounds, really overweight and out shape. The thirty year old is now “cut-up” and a problem for anyone in the mats. How did he do it? He has listened and follows directions and accepts most challenges despite the sacrifices. Rookie of the Year - Beker “Jaguarpaw” Escalante “Jaguarpaw” is a natural athlete, and also a very good competitor. Winning multiple times the White Belt and Beginner Divisions and even placing at the Intermediate division. Nevertheless what made him win the award is that Jaguarpaw was able to overcome some harsh life circumstances and never gave up on jiu-jitsu. Is this “never say die/quit attitude” that we truly praise and for that reason he is awarded the Rookie of the Year Award. Competitor of the Year - Andre “Whiteshaq” Arata “Whiteshaq” has won the White belt Division, Beginner Division, and Intermediate Division at Local Tournaments. On top of that Andre became Third Laws first National Champion wining the IBJJ US Nationals at White Belt. Andre now a blue belt also teaches classes at Third Law BJJ.
Congratulations to all the guys and we truly hope that they inspired prospective, new, and current students.

I shot a triangle and he was very close to tapping out. I tried to sink the triangle a little deeper and he escaped. He passed my guard and got side control. Being down 4 points with a minute and half left I fought out of side control turtled, and the fight ended”. (Silver Medal)
Kevin after a match
Congratulations to everyone who competed and followed the system keep up the good work.
Tito stands in the middle victorious over his opponents.
In Tito’s 1st match he executed his game perfectly by passing the guard and gaining side control of his opponent, then he mounted his opponent and looked to finish with an americana. In Tito’s 2nd match Tito quickly gains side control of his opponent, in his struggle he loses his position and both fighters stand up. The opponent behind on points scrambles for take downs but Tito defends until the time runs out.
Tito Ortiz 1st in No Gi
Congratulations Tito on winning 1st in Gi and 1st no Gi in the Copa America National Championships.
Chris Snyder an old time friend of Roberto was vacationing in Naples, and stopped by the academy to show us some high quality Judo. Chris lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan where him and Roberto met and trained for 6 months. Chris really helped instructor Roberto sharpen his Judo skills.

We also started our student exchange program with Crazy 88.We had Jon “Devastator” Delbrugge stay at our academy for 4 days. Jon had an awesome time. On Saturday , February 28th. We send Jon “ The Butcher” Dysert to do his first blue belt tournament despite having being promoted less than four days before. I spoke with Jon and let him know that the faster we get out there competing at the next level, win or lose, the faster he will improve and eventually dominate at the level.

As I expected Jon had his hands full losing the first match. Unfortunately for this one we couldn’t video tape the matches. Nevertheless the pictures do show the holes Jon has in his game and that we must fix ASAP.
Success at lower belts does not guarantee success at higher belts and lack of success at lower belts does not guarantee failure at higher belts. Things Jon may have gotten away at white belt he will not get away with at blue belt. Let’s take a Look
Jon Attempts Choke
Notice that Jon is going for a loop choke or a cross choke but he does not have a well established guard. Leaves him vulnerable. IF the opponent defends correctly Jon will get passed. At white belt the opponents don’t know how to defend as well.
Mike “ Big Mike” Eastman found out that white belts could compete and ended up getting an opportunity to test his game vs. blue belts. In his weight division Mike did not have a competitor. So they allowed him to compete in the Blue Belt Absolute. Mike ended up winning 4 matches submitting a Blue Belt from American Top Team. Mike would finished 3rd.

Mike Eastman Finishes 3rdIn The Blue Belt Absolute
Props to Jon for getting out there and embracing the new challenges like a true soldier and setting a good example and many props to Mike on his 4 victories and competing in such a short notice.
