In our First Awards Ceremony Banquet (now a yearly tradition) three main awards were given: Most Improved, Competitor of the Year, and Most Improved. Every year Coach Roberto Torralbas pushes all the guys to the limit and it is always good to take some time off to celebrate all their accomplishments. The Banquet was celebrated on March 22, 2009 just a few days after we celebrated the school second anniversary.
Most Improved Grappler - Kevin “Humane Society” Dalton
Kevin has accomplished a lot in less than one year. Kevin has won the White Belt Division at NAGA and currently medals every time he competes. Nevertheless the award was not given because of his competition credentials, but rather for his hard work. Kevin Arrived at Third Law weighting over 215 pounds, really overweight and out shape. The thirty year old is now “cut-up” and a problem for anyone in the mats. How did he do it? He has listened and follows directions and accepts most challenges despite the sacrifices.
Rookie of the Year - Beker “Jaguarpaw” Escalante
“Jaguarpaw” is a natural athlete, and also a very good competitor. Winning multiple times the White Belt and Beginner Divisions and even placing at the Intermediate division. Nevertheless what made him win the award is that Jaguarpaw was able to overcome some harsh life circumstances and never gave up on jiu-jitsu. Is this “never say die/quit attitude” that we truly praise and for that reason he is awarded the Rookie of the Year Award.
Competitor of the Year - Andre “Whiteshaq” Arata
“Whiteshaq” has won the White belt Division, Beginner Division, and Intermediate Division at Local Tournaments. On top of that Andre became Third Laws first National Champion wining the IBJJ US Nationals at White Belt. Andre now a blue belt also teaches classes at Third Law BJJ.
Congratulations to all the guys and we truly hope that they inspired prospective, new, and current students.
