ADCC GI Trials Results

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

On Saturday , February 28th. We send Jon “ The Butcher” Dysert to do his first blue belt tournament despite having being promoted less than four days before. I spoke with Jon and let him know that the faster we get out there competing at the next level, win or lose, the faster he will improve and eventually dominate at the level.

Mike ” BigMike” Eastman Adult Blue Belt Open 3rd

As I expected Jon had his hands full losing the first match. Unfortunately for this one we couldn’t video tape the matches. Nevertheless the pictures do show the holes Jon has in his game and that we must fix ASAP.

Success at lower belts does not guarantee success at higher belts and lack of success at lower belts does not guarantee failure at higher belts. Things Jon may have gotten away at white belt he will not get away with at blue belt. Let’s take a Look

Jon Attempts Choke

Third Law BJJ Naples, FL: Jon ” The Butcher” Dysert’s first tournament at Blue Belt

Notice that Jon is going for a loop choke or a cross choke but he does not have a well established guard. Leaves him vulnerable. IF the opponent defends correctly Jon will get passed. At white belt the opponents don’t know how to defend as well.

Mike “ Big Mike” Eastman found out that white belts could compete and ended up getting an opportunity to test his game vs. blue belts. In his weight division Mike did not have a competitor. So they allowed him to compete in the Blue Belt Absolute. Mike ended up winning 4 matches submitting a Blue Belt from American Top Team. Mike would finished 3rd.

2 New Blue Belts = 1 Blue Belt Squad!

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

On Tuesday 24th of February 2009. No one expected that our student Jon “The Butcher” Dysert was going to get promoted to the rank of blue belt. To give you little bit of background on Jon, he had won his last 3 tournaments (his first 3 tournaments) with the Gi and had a total of 10 matches of which 8 ended up with submission ( 80% submission rate..THAT’S GREAT!). One would think that he spend a lot fo time grappling in those ten matches as each match is either 5 or 6 minutes. If Jon grappled more that 9 minutes total in his 3 tournaments I would be surprised. Can’t blink on the butcher.

We had another surprise on this night. JON WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE GETTING PROMOTED. Camilo Castro one of Third Law BJJ’s first students got promoted as well. Camilo Castro had been with us from the early days and through headaches, thunderstorms, hurricanes , and Gods knows what else manage to make it to the next level. Camilo is a great teammate to everyone and suffered a broken nose in his last tournament which he was dominating and could not fight in the finals. Because of it he could not  do our Blue Belt Test, but he promised to do it at a later time.

 Congratulations Camilo

In one more weekend of action at Third Law BJJ, we sent out four competitors to the Copa America State Championships Tournament in Lakeland. The results were once again good: 4 competitors, 5 Gold Medals.  In one week we have had (a total of 10 Medals ( 8 Gold - 1 Silver - 1 Bronze).

The day started with Beker “JaguarPaw” Escalante. Beker won all his matches, Gi and No-Gi, capturing 2 Gold Medals. In the Gi division ( < 139 pounds), Beker swept his first opponent from half guard, and then proceeded to pass and finish with a bread cutter. In his second match, he fought the same competitor he had defeated in the finals of NAGA World Cup at Boca the past weekend. The fight started in a similar fashion with Beker sweeping and passing. His opponent managed to even the score, sending the match to overtime. Beker managed to pull a close one by an advantage. In the finals, Beker beat his opponent 4-2.

Beker wins the White Belt Division again.

In the No-Gi Division, Beker swept, passed, mounted and arm triangled his first opponent in less than two minutes. Beker went on to win the finals for his second Gold of the Day.

Mission Accomplished!  Beker wins Beginner and receives third gold medal  in the last 7 days!

Mike “BigMike” Eastman’s first tournament was a success. Mike submitted 4 out of 5 opponents. In the Gi division, Mike tackled his opponent with a not very pretty attempt at a single leg takedown. He proceeded to pass his opponent, and mounted, from where he finished with an Ezekiel choke. In the finals, Mike took down his opponent with an Osotogari and passed his opponent, mounted, and once again finished with an Ezekiel.

In the No-Gi, Mike took down his first opponent with an outside leg trip. From side control, BigMike finished with an arm triangle. In the semifinals, Mike was taken down and managed to get to his close guard from where he swept his opponent. After a scramble, Mike found himself in half-guard and managed to sweep his opponent again for the sweep and the win. In the finals, Mike was taken down and found himself in side control within 20 second of the start of the match. Mike managed to get out and attempted to take his opponent’s back, but was unable to get his hooks in and when the guy turtled, Eastman managed to sink in the Guillotine. Congrats to BigMike for battling out there and ending up with 2 Gold Medals for the day.

Mike Eastman wins all his matches in his first tournament conquering the Beginner Division as well.

Jon “The Buthcer” Dysert was a bit sick for this tournament, but he still went on and started his Gi division. Jon pulled guard on his first opponent, took his back, and finished him with a bow and arrow choke under 20 seconds. Jon took down his second opponent for the win. In the finals, Dysert swept from closed guard and proceeded to half guard, from where he passed, mounted, and Ezekieled his opponent, wining the gold.

Jon even serious after wining the white belt division.
