First up to bat was Roberto Torralbas who faced Fred Moncaio from Team Popovitch in the No-Gi Absolute Division. The match started with Fred pulling close guard and Roberto passing from the under over position. Fred attacked with some leg locks that Roberto was expecting and defended well. From half guard Fred tried to sweep, Roberto counters a looked for a triangle that Fred was also expecting. Fight goes back to the feet, where Roberto shoots for a single and as he was raising the leg to finish it for the first score Fred manages to catch a guillotine choke to end the fight.

In the Gi Absolute Division  Roberto fought Edson Deniz in his first fight. Fight started with some grip fighting in which Roberto dominated causing the World and Panamerican Champion to sit open guard. Edson was quick with his spider guard and manage to sweep for 2 points. Roberto tried to sweep from the under over position and came close but was unable to get on top. Then Roberto attacked from the half, but the experience opponent capitalized on a couple of mistakes Roberto made and managed to pass. Roberto recuperated and started attacking from the close guard and open guard, but the Edson defended well as time ran out for the score of 5-0.

Not the best of days for Head Instructor Roberto Torralbas, but the team overall had a very solid day.

Andre “Whiteshaq” Arata in the Intermediate Division No-Gi Super Heavy Weight Divison disposed of his two opponents via submission. In the finals he applied a ncie armbar from the close guard that we had just covered in class. In the Gi Division Andre did not have an opponent in his weight class. Andre will now be fighting in the Advanced Division.

So far 1 Gold, 1 Silver, but the lightweights will not go out with out a bang in their first tournament. In the No-Gi John Dysert got caught in a heel hook in his first match, and Kenneth Gallego won his first two matches, lost his third and won his fourth in for the Bronze Medal. In the Gi White Belt Division While in one side of the bracket Kenneth took down his opponents  and passed their guards and submitted them, John was busy jumping close guard and taking their backs. They both won 3 matches each to close out the division. GREAT JOB!

Third Law BJJ First Home Grown Blue Belt.

Monday, October 13th, 2008

I am proud to introduce all of you to Third Law BJJ’s first blue belt. After a year and a half of many promising students, one managed to overcome our standards and become our first blue belt. His name is Andre “WhiteShaq” Arata.

His promotion symbolizes the start of a new era for the team. Andre Arata is an excellent example for everyone. High attendance to classes and circuits workouts, pays high attention in class and always trying to refine his technique, tries to be the best teacher and teammate he can be, excellent competitor ( just coming of having won the IBJJF American National Championships,, in California a couple of weekends ago), and also importantly a humble and modest individual. Andre has put a lot of hard work to get to where he is today and he had one more grueling test before his promotion.
